Students from CCS Athelstan Park’s Yellow and Blue classes recently enjoyed a visit to Shepton Mallet prison.
After originally opening in 1625, HMP Shepton Mallet was the world’s oldest operating prison – until its closure in 2013. Since then, it has become a tourist attraction, teaching visitors the grim realities of prison life.
Athelstan’s students were given a guided tour and learnt about how things were run, as well as how prisoners spent their time. They also learnt who some of the notorious criminals at Shepton Mallet were, such as the Kray twins.
