When you arrive at Compass Community School Eld Park, you’ll notice the calm, nurturing atmosphere. There’s a sense of home here—something you can feel straight away. This is because the environment has been purposefully designed to reduce anxiety and help learners feel safe.
Eld Park supports children and young people aged 7 to 17, many of whom have previously been disconnected from education. Some have been out of school for long periods or have rarely experienced success in a classroom. That’s why they are met with patience and consistency. Relationships always come first here—so we were especially pleased when Ofsted noted that “adults swiftly get to know pupils and find out what makes them tick.” That’s exactly what we do.
Supporting each learner takes strong teamwork, which is something we prioritise every day. Teachers, HLTAs, TAs and our Therapeutic Pastoral Lead collaborate closely—sharing ideas, planning activities and responding to whatever the day brings. No one is left to manage a challenge alone, making our successes feel like shared achievements.
Although we’re all trained in SEND—giving us the tools to reach out to learners effectively—it’s often the informal support, such as a quick heads up in the staffroom, or a kind word that really makes a difference. That sense of belonging is always there.
Class sizes are small at Eld Park, with one Primary group, two KS3 cohorts and two KS4. Learners make real progress here, because they’re finally being taught in a way that suits their needs. Our facilities support everything we do. The well-used library, computer room and large kitchen give us options to vary how and where learning happens. Outside, the forest school area is taking shape—adding another way for learners to build confidence and curiosity. These spaces also shape the day. Breaktimes become moments to connect, with learners enjoying football, basketball or choosing some quiet time before returning to lessons.
At Eld Park, we get to see change happen. A learner who’s never spoken in class raises their hand. Someone who once refused to read tries a whole page. We see those moments every week—and every time, we’re reminded why we do this work.
