GCSEs start on 5th May; A levels a week later. For young people up and down the country, this will be the culmination of years of hard work and diligent study.
For some, this exam season will be a mere formality: it’s gone in and stayed in—all you need is a chance to prove it. That’s great. 😊 The very best of luck to you. (Not that you’ll need it.) But for others, no matter how hard you work—you just don’t feel ready. If you fall into this second—and I suspect, larger—group, here are some tips:
1. Break revision into manageable chunks
Trying to tackle everything at once can feel overwhelming. Use a daily or weekly planner to break down your subjects and topics into small, focused sessions. Even 30-minute blocks of concentrated revision, followed by a short break, can be hugely effective. It’s not about doing everything—it’s about doing enough well.
2. Practise under exam conditions
Past papers are your friend. Working through real exam questions under timed conditions helps you get used to the pressure and pace—and shows you what you’re already capable of. Focus first on topics you know a bit about. Confidence builds when you see your knowledge in action.
3. Turn anxiety into action
Feeling nervous is normal—but letting it paralyse you isn’t helpful. Instead, use that nervous energy to spur you into action. Make a checklist of topics you want to cover, and start ticking things off. You’ll feel more in control, and that sense of progress is a huge motivator.
4. Don’t go it alone
Talking things through with someone else—whether it’s a friend, a teacher, or someone at home—can really help. Sometimes, just saying out loud what’s stressing you is enough to take the edge off. Study groups or revision sessions can also help make learning more active and less isolating.
5. Remember: it’s not all or nothing
Exams matter, yes—but they are not the only thing that matters. Your worth is not measured by your grades. These weeks are just one part of your journey, and it’s okay to feel unsure. What matters most is that you keep going, keep trying, and trust that you’ve come further than you think.
Exam season won’t last forever. And when it’s over, the whole summer will stretch out before you. 🌞
