The recent cold snap bought fun in the snow to staff and students at CCS Hemsworth. But a good-natured snowball fight and the building of a snowman provided only a brief change of focus from an otherwise very busy period.
Early November saw Hemsworth celebrating Parliament Week, with special lessons in PSHE and citizenship explaining the workings of our democratic system. Throughout the week, students discussed the role of Parliament and held a daily debate, with a vote, to try the democratic process out for themselves.
Later on in the month saw Hemsworth celebrating interfaith week by cooking a range of dishes that are traditionally served during different religious festivals. Beef brisket was cooked – which is traditionally associated with Judaism. Hot cross buns were made – traditionally eaten during the Christian festival of Easter. A vegan meal was representative of the Buddhist faith. And butter chicken, as an example of the Hindu faith.
Anti-bullying week, which happens in mid-November, was also celebrated at Hemsworth. A number of activities and assemblies were carried out to support students understanding of this important topic – and to help them build empathy when dealing with other people.
