On September 4th, Year 9 students at Seacole Park went on a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
There was much excited discussion among the students, who wanted to choose the best route around the park to view the must-see animals. Among these were the big cats and giraffes. But top of the list was a huge polar bear, who looked even more impressive when standing up.
Learning experience
Making their way around the centre, students were able to learn about each of the animals from detailed information boards. These were conveniently positioned outside each of the enclosures. The boards included information on the animals’ natural habitat, as well as other fun facts. Students were, for example, surprised to learn that polar bears can live perfectly well in non-freezing conditions. (Although, they are happy to see the odd ice block during the hotter months.)
In the UK, the types of animals on view at the park can only be viewed in zoos. This gave the year 9s a valuable learning experience, in terms of cultural capital, as well as a tremendous start to their new academic year.
Bonding experience
The trip also provided a great bonding experience for everyone. After the long summer break, this was an ideal opportunity for students to re-establish positive relationships with peers, as well as staff. Miss Murphy, one of the trip’s accompanying staff members, was delighted at how well students engaged with the event. “Today was a really successful day,” she said. “It was lovely to see the students so animated and chatty!”
Future possibilities
Possible future visits to the wildlife park could include increasing the time spent in the education areas, with the park’s staff. There could also be the possibility for hands-on experiences with some of the smaller animals.
