Staff and students at CCS Seacole Park found some inspiring ways to get students thinking about their future jobs during careers week.
On Tuesday, students dressed up to represent the jobs they wanted to do when they grew up. Among the excellent costumes were examples of builders, proof-readers, fashion designers and teachers.
To promote problem solving and teamworking skills, one of Seacole’s year 9 students invented a game called Egg Smash. In this game, students had to build a device to protect an egg from breaking when a heavy ball was dropped on it. Students came up with some great inventions, that really showcased their abilities. After testing, most of the eggs were broken but 3 survived!
This was a great fun activity, that encouraged students to discuss the problem and formulate a workable solution – a process typical of the modern workplace.
The next activity involved cooking skills. Students were given 3 ingredients and no instructions. Each student was responsible for one of the ingredients. They were then told to make pancakes – without the assistance of staff. This tested their communication and teamworking skills but resulted in some nice pancakes being made. (See photos.)
The students really enjoyed these activities, which allowed some children to show previously hidden leadership and planning skills. Among the very positive comments from students was, “Can we do things like this again?”
