A student at Seacole Park recently demonstrated considerable writing talent by producing an excellent piece of work on the subject of Fundamental British Values.
Each week, Seacole Park has a different topic which is discussed during registration time. The aim of these topics is to help develop learners’ critical thinking skills and deepen understanding of relevant issues.
The student says that she loves the debating aspect of registration times. “Registration is helping me remember what I’ve learnt throughout the week, and we can win prizes each week.”
Her piece was so good that it won the week’s debate and was read out, by her, to her peers in assembly. The piece is reproduced below.
“This week, during our registration, we have been learning about British Values. On Monday, Mrs Robson put on a video about what it means to be British, and taught us what the four British Values are.
They are: Individual liberty, which means that every individual has freedom and rights, and knows how to express those freedoms and rights in a safe way. Tolerance and respect, which means that we are tolerant of those of different faiths, ethnicity, race, or anything else, than us. Democracy, which means that as a nation, we have a right to vote for our government and those who represent us in parliament. And the rule of law, which means that we have laws and restrictions in place to keep everyone safe, and that people who break these rules understand the consequences of doing so.
On Tuesday, we went back over the information we learned on Monday. On Wednesday we debated. I debated Pro-British Values, stating that the rule of law helps to keep everybody safe, and that tolerance and acceptance helps everybody be seen equally, and it doesn’t matter where you come from, as long as you see Britain as your home, we will welcome you as part of our society.”
