School avoidance, also known as Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), is when a child or young person struggles to attend school due to emotional distress. This can include anxiety, fear or low mood. Unlike truancy, school avoidance is not about defianceāitās about a learner feeling overwhelmed or unsafe in the school environment.
This distress often shows up in physical ways: headaches, stomach aches or nausea. It can also lead to behaviours such as crying, hiding or becoming withdrawn. Some learners may be able to reach the school gates but canāt go in; others might attend but feel unable to join lessons or stay for the full day.
Recognising that it is not always a matter of choice is an essential step in properly understanding the issue. It is often a symptom of unmet emotional or sensory needs. These might include social anxiety, academic pressure, peer difficulties, family circumstances or underlying mental health conditions. Without understanding the root causes, it’s easy to misinterpret the behaviour.
School Avoidance Awareness Weekārunning from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th September 2025āaims to challenge those misunderstandings. The week provides guidance for parents, carers and professionals, helping them to spot the signs early and respond with empathy. The focus is on creating supportive environments where children feel safe to return to learning, one step at a time.
At Compass Community Schools, we approach the issue with understanding and flexibility. Our staff know that behaviour is communication, and we work closely with families, therapists and medical professionals to identify what each learner needs. Support plans might include phased returns, designated safe spaces, or regular one-to-one check-ins with a trusted adult.
Everything we do starts with building trust. From there, we help learners rediscover a sense of safety, routine and belonging. Overcoming school avoidance isnāt about quick fixesāitās about creating the right conditions for each learner to succeed in their own time.
At Compass, weāre here to walk that path with them.
