Staff and students at Boleyn Park recently took part in this year’s No Pens Day. The national event, held this year on Wednesday 27th November, encourages the teaching of activities that don’t require things to be written down. Instead, the focus of the day in on observing, talking and listening skills. The event is also run as a fundraiser in support of Speech and Language UK.
By doing away with writing tasks, students are able to listen far more intently and express their ideas verbally, without having to move through the written stages. This encourages the speaking and listening process to flow freely.
Students started their No Pens Day with a game of guess the career charades. This involved students trying to guess the career that another person was demonstrating using physical movements. This proved very popular with students, who want to do it again soon.
Later in the day, they were taken to the cinema to watch Despicable Me 4. Students loved this film. They were engrossed throughout and commented on how funny it was.
To end the day, they played a maths matrix game. This involved making a grid on the classroom floor. Students were able to move other people around the grid, using only mathematical terminology. Again, this activity went down very well.
Staff and students thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to taking part in next year’s event.
