🌲 Learning, Belonging and Confidence in the Woods

Forest School has provided a positive start to the autumn term for primary learners at Compass Community School Cledford Park. After the summer break, it has been a welcome space to reconnect with familiar faces and gently welcome new learners into the group. The weeks have been busy, purposeful and, despite the occasional cold morning, full of energy and warmth.

Sessions have been rich with hands-on learning. Learners have whittled wood to make their own pencils, drilled conkers to create mobiles, jewellery and even toy car wheels, and worked together to build woodland scenes using acorns and natural materials. Peg fairies, mud pies and creative play have sparked imagination and conversation, while shared tasks have encouraged cooperation and patience.

Time around the campfire has been a highlight. Roasting marshmallows and sharing hot chocolate offers a chance to slow down, talk and feel part of a group. These moments matter. They help learners practise turn-taking, communication and emotional regulation in a setting that feels safe and relaxed.

Forest School also makes space for rest. Hammocks are there for quieter moments, supporting learners to listen to their bodies and reset when needed.

This outdoor learning supports confidence, resilience and connection. It helps learners build practical skills, trust adults and each other, and experience success in small, meaningful ways. As the term continues, the woods remain a place where learning feels possible, shared and enjoyable.
