🌳 Forest School Learning Comes to Life at Willow Dean

At CCS Willow Dean, Forest School sessions are giving learners the chance to step outside the classroom and into a world of discovery—right on their own school site.

The school has a dedicated Forest School area where learners are encouraged to explore, build, climb, and connect with nature. Activities include den building, crafting with natural materials, tree climbing, cooking over open fires and learning to use tools safely. These hands-on experiences help learners develop confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills in a setting that is both structured and adventurous.

Forest School is based on an approach that began in Scandinavia and has since been widely adopted in the UK. Its core idea is that outdoor, play-based learning—particularly in natural settings—supports children’s emotional and physical development. It allows them to take supported risks, follow their interests, and build a stronger sense of independence.

At Willow Dean, learners respond with enthusiasm and energy. Sessions are filled with problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. Whether they are building shelters, cooking on an open fire, or working together to solve a challenge, learners are highly engaged and eager to take part.

Staff have noticed that many learners show new strengths and qualities during Forest School sessions. The natural environment helps reduce anxiety, improve focus, and encourage positive relationships. For some, it’s where they feel most free to express themselves and try new things.

With Forest School now embedded into the life of the school, Willow Dean is creating the kind of learning environment that stays with children for years to come.
