šŸ“… Empathy Day 2025: Celebrating Understanding and Human Connection

Thursday 12th June is Empathy Day 2025! šŸ’œ

Empathy means being able to understand and relate to what someone else is feeling. It helps people build strong relationships, resolve disagreements calmly, and support each other through life’s ups and downs. When communities develop empathy, they become kinder, more inclusive places—where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

Empathy Day was launched in 2017 by EmpathyLab, a not-for-profit organisation that helps young people develop empathy through books, discussions and meaningful action. Held every June, the day encourages learners to use empathy in daily life by thinking about others’ experiences and showing kindness.

Empathy can take different forms, including:

  • Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes
  • Sharing another person’s emotions
  • Wanting to help when someone’s upset
  • Feeling someone else’s pain
  • Connecting through shared beliefs or values

Showing empathy is good for everyone. The person giving empathy feels connected and purposeful, while the person receiving it feels supported and understood. In wider society, empathy leads to fewer conflicts, stronger cooperation, and deeper trust between people.

At Compass Community Schools, empathy is at the heart of what we do. We embed kindness, emotional understanding and respect across the curriculum. This helps learners feel safe, included and valued, whatever their background or personal story.

Here are five ways Compass learners and staff use empathy every day:

  • Using restorative conversations to sort out disagreements
  • Acting out different viewpoints in lessons
  • Listening to friends and sharing similar experiences
  • Helping with local projects and fundraising for charities
  • Reading and talking about books that reflect many kinds of lives and challenges

Empathy Day 2025 reminds us how powerful empathy really is. It’s not an extra—it’s essential for building fairer, more caring communities. By putting empathy at the centre of our learning environments, we’re helping shape a more hopeful and inclusive future for all.
