This half term, primary learners at CCS Eld Park explored what it takes to become part of the fire service as part of their âWorld of Workâ topic.
They began by learning about the history of firefighting, tracing events from the Great Fire of London through to the modern day. Using photos, videos and a detailed timeline, they compared how firefighting techniques and equipment had changed over the centuries.
Curious about real-life careers, they looked closely at the training and skills needed to work as a firefighter, discussing the bravery and teamwork that the job demands.
One of the highlights was an exciting visit to Thetford Fire Station. Led by Firefighter Steve, the group toured the kit room, communications hub and even stepped inside a fire engine. They tried on protective uniforms, practised using the hose and explored the training building, imagining what it might feel like to tackle a real scenario in smoke-filled rooms. To finish off the visit, the crew turned on the lights and sirensâmaking for an unforgettable photo opportunity.
Learners then put on uniforms and ID cards for their final training session. In the first challenge, they tested their courage by searching a dark room for a trapped casualty (a teddy) and carrying it to safety. The second scenario tested their fitness as they dashed between cones to rescue more teddies and put out painted flames with mini extinguishers before collecting their hoses and racing back to base.
The new recruits threw themselves into every part of this immersive topic. They gained valuable insight into the incredible work of the fire serviceâshowing courage, teamwork and determination along the way. Well done to everyone involved!
