Monday 8th September marks International Literacy Day 2025, a global celebration of reading and writing. First declared by UNESCO in 1966, the day serves to remind the international community that literacy is a fundamental human right—and a key driver of equity and opportunity.
This year’s theme, “Promoting literacy for a world in transition”, focuses on the role of literacy in navigating global change. From climate action and technological development to economic resilience and community cohesion, literacy remains essential to building the kind of future we want to live in.
Across the globe, International Literacy Day events will take place at local, national and regional levels to raise awareness, spark discussion and highlight best practice. As ever, the day draws attention to the importance of inclusive learning opportunities—especially for young people who have been excluded from education or faced barriers to learning.
