Compass Community School Pembroke Park will open in Colchester in September 2026, providing a new specialist setting offering transformative, therapeutic education for children and young people.
Designed for learners with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Pembroke Park has been created for children who have often found mainstream education difficult to sustain.
A school built on security and trust
Pembroke Park is grounded in a simple but powerful idea: when children feel secure, known and believed in, ambition can grow. Staff take time to build strong, trusted relationships with every learner – listening carefully, responding consistently and understanding what sits beneath behaviour.
As children begin to feel safe, attendance stabilises and engagement improves. For many families, this consistency brings reassurance too, as routines return and confidence begins to rebuild both in school and at home.
That sense of security creates space for learners to try new things, develop independence and begin to look ahead. Over time, young people are supported to build life skills, gain qualifications and prepare for life beyond school, college, training or employment.
Learning that supports progress over time
Pembroke Park will offer up to 60 places for learners from Years 3 to 11. Learning will take place in small groups, supported by skilled staff and predictable routines, within a therapeutic, trauma-informed approach embedded throughout the school day.
The curriculum is shaped around individual strengths, interests and aspirations. Alongside strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and communication, learners will follow one of two pathways at secondary level – academic or vocational – ensuring learning remains meaningful and realistic.
Purpose-built facilities will include therapy spaces, a sensory room and soft play areas, all designed to support emotional regulation, confidence and readiness to learn.
As part of the wider Compass Community, Pembroke Park is strengthened by shared expertise in education, therapeutic practice and safeguarding, with experience supporting children and young people with complex needs since 2012.
Online information event
Ahead of the school opening, families, professionals and members of the local community are invited to attend an online information event.
The session will introduce Pembroke Park’s approach, outline plans for the school and offer an opportunity to hear directly from the leadership team and ask questions.
The online information event will take place via Microsoft Teams on Monday 2nd February, running from 5:00pm to 5:30pm.
