Learners from CCS North have successfully completed the expedition element of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award—paddling their way to achievement along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
The two-day journey took place between Gargrave and Silsden, both in the Skipton area. For most of the group, this was the final requirement needed to earn their Bronze Award, marking the culmination of months of commitment and preparation.
The experience brought a mix of emotions and memorable moments. There was plenty of laughter, a few tears, and even an unusual detour involving the heroic (and nearly impossible) rescue of a stray traffic cone. Perhaps most unexpectedly, the group also encountered a feisty local swan—culminating in a dramatic moment when the bird launched itself onto a canoe and struck teacher Joel McQuillan in the back with its wing.
Despite the challenges, all participants showed determination, teamwork and resilience—key qualities celebrated by the DofE programme. The CCS North team could not be prouder of their achievements.
Well done to all involved for representing the school with courage and good humour throughout. Your efforts on the water have truly paid off!
