A CCS Hemsworth Year 9 student recently took part in a three-day residential as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award—an experience filled with personal growth, new challenges, and exciting firsts.
Traveling to South Wales marked the first time the student had ever been to another country. Although he initially felt anxious, his excitement quickly took over. Along the way, he made a memorable stop at Barry Island, where he got to see the filming location of Gavin & Stacey.
For the first time, he also stayed in a B&B. Despite initial nerves, he embraced the experience and made the most of his time away from home.
Once at Bike Park Wales, he began his volunteering by assisting staff with setting up stands and supporting other young people attending from different schools. He also helped the coaches, as the younger children built their confidence in cycling. In addition to volunteering, he made the most of the incredible off-road bike tracks, riding trails designed for all skill levels—including jumps and ramps for more advanced riders. One highlight was riding the UK’s longest green flow trail, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Beyond his official volunteering tasks, he showed great initiative by collecting litter around the local area and trails, helping to keep the environment safe and clean.
The entire CCS Hemsworth team is incredibly proud of him for overcoming personal barriers and embracing this residential with such a positive attitude.
