Eight students from CCS Essex have successfully completed Essex Fire Service’s FireBreak programme.
The 5 day course began in early February and was delivered at Wivenhoe Fire Station, in Colchester, Essex.
Experienced firefighters mentored the students throughout the programme. The boys were trained in a combination of practical fire drills and classroom-based activities. The practical sessions were carried out in the fire service’s drill yard, using real firefighting equipment to create a more realistic experience. During the classroom sessions, consequence scenarios were discussed, which focussed on knife crime and gang awareness.
Five of Essex’s students gained AQA accreditation for their work. Four students also passed a first aid course – with a fifth student only missing out because of his age.
The staff who accompanied them during the week were extremely proud of how the students worked together to solve the challenges they were set. Headteacher, Nathan Kempster, explained how he, “Thoroughly enjoyed witnessing the fruits of all their hard work in the pass out parade held on the final day.”
