Boleyn Park buzzed with excitement as learners and staff came together to mark International Literacy Dayâa global celebration of reading, writing and the power of language to connect and inspire.
Observed each year on 8th September, International Literacy Day encourages communities around the world to reflect on the vital role of literacy in promoting human dignity and lifelong learning. First established by UNESCO in 1967, the day raises awareness of the challenges faced by millions of people who still lack basic reading and writing skillsâand celebrates the progress being made in classrooms and communities everywhere.
At Compass Community Schools, itâs a chance to champion learning, share stories and highlight the power of education to transform lives.
At CCS Boleyn Park, the day began with learners exploring what literacy means and why it mattersâboth locally and globally. Dressed as their favourite book characters, from wizards and detectives to animals and adventurers, they proudly shared the stories that had inspired their costumes.
The morning continued with a lively game of charades, where learners guessed vocabulary words based on clues and actions. This interactive session reinforced language skills in a playful and memorable way. Later, every learner wrote a book review, offering their thoughts and reflections on a story they loved.
It was a joyful and imaginative day, filled with creativity, curiosity and connection. Boleyn Parkâs celebration of literacy day was a powerful reminder of how reading and writing open the door to self-expression, understanding and lifelong opportunity.
