As one of their activities for the recent British Science Week, students at CCS Wheatley Park enjoyed taking part in a butterfly camouflage competition. The competition was used to demonstrate how some animals use camouflage techniques to protect them from predators.
Students were given the brief to find an area in the school and to design a butterfly that would be perfectly camouflaged in that environment. Students enjoyed using their creative skills and came up with a range of highly imaginative solutions to the problem.
Deputy headteacher, Emma Orchard, then went on a butterfly hunt – to see if she could find the cleverly camouflaged butterflies. Although they were all hidden in plain sight, the students’ efforts to conceal them made the task very tricky.
The high standard of work also made the judging of the competition challenging – but after much thought, the winners were DL, MW and DMG. (The winning entries are shown below.)
