This winter, learners at Willow Dean have embraced the outdoors in a brilliant way—by joining the RSPB Big Bird Watch as part of their Forest School experience.
Armed with binoculars, notepads and plenty of patience, learners observed and identified the wide variety of birds that visited their forest site. They built a bird hide to quietly observe wildlife, and crafted bird feeders and nest boxes to support local birdlife. These hands-on activities sparked rich conversations about bird habitats, seasonal changes, and how humans can help protect nature.
Time spent outside didn’t just connect learners to the natural world—it built confidence, curiosity and collaboration. In Forest School, the environment becomes a teacher in its own right, and this term’s focus on birds has brought that to life in memorable ways.
Helen Broscombe, Forest School Leader, was proud of the group’s commitment. “It’s been fantastic to see learners so engaged with the project. They’ve shown real care for the wildlife and developed a deeper understanding of the world around them.”
Whatever the weather, Willow Dean continues to show how learning outside can build strong foundations for personal and academic growth.
