🌍 World Environment Day: A Global Call To Action Against Plastic Pollution

World Environment Day, held annually on 5th June, is the United Nations’ principal platform for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our planet. First celebrated in 1973, it has grown to become the largest global environmental event, with participation from over 150 countries.

The day was established to inspire positive change—at individual, community, national and global levels. From planting trees to cleaning up coastlines, World Environment Day helps unite people in the shared mission of caring for our Earth.

This year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” is a powerful reminder of our growing plastic crisis. With millions of tonnes of plastic entering oceans and landscapes every year, the need to reduce, reuse and rethink our reliance on single-use plastics has never been more urgent.

At Compass Community Schools, we know that education must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. We aim to equip learners with the knowledge and confidence to shape a better future—for themselves and for the world they’ll inherit.

1. Carry a reusable water bottle and say no to single-use plastic bottles.
2. Use lunchboxes instead of clingfilm or disposable bags.
3. Recycle crisp packets and sweet wrappers through specialist schemes.
4. Help run or join a school-wide plastic audit.
5. Take part in a community litter pick or plastic-free pledge.
