In a recent science lesson, students at CCS Hereford carried out a practical investigation to test for the presence of starch in different fruits and vegetables.
Using iodine solution, the class explored which foods contained starch – linking the experiment directly to their understanding of biology testing. The hands-on nature of the activity helped students apply scientific knowledge in a meaningful way and supported their grasp of key biological processes.
The investigation also provided an opportunity to revisit and reinforce the concept of photosynthesis. Through testing, students were able to see how plants produce and store energy, giving them a clearer picture of how starch forms part of this essential process.
By connecting classroom learning with real-life examples, the lesson strengthened students’ scientific thinking and offered a clear demonstration of how plants function as energy producers.
