Learners in Athelstan Parkās Yellow Class have recently begun using a new tool in the classroomāand the results have been remarkable.
In response to feedback from the group, the teaching team introduced a Giant Now and Next board to help break the day into manageable chunks. The structure is simple: learners take part in 30 minutes of focused learning, followed by 15 minutes of personalised time. Options for this time include a walk outdoors, a quick basketball session, some iPad or laptop time, or drawing. Each learner has their own visual timetable at their desk, helping them to plan their day with greater clarity.
The impact has been immediate. Learners are now more focused during lesson time and are producing work of a noticeably higher quality. By giving them ownership of how their personalised time is spent, the team has seen a shift in energy and motivation across the board.
The new approach came out of conversations between staff and learners, with everyone involved in shaping the routine. It’s a strong example of how listening to learners and adapting to their needs can lead to real improvements in the classroom.
Staff have been full of praise for the way Yellow Class have responded to the changeāwith calm, consistent focus now a daily feature of learning time.
